April/May Megagame: Settlers of Catan

(ANNETTE):

Hey CJ! I have volunteered to run the April game over here, which may turn into an unmitigated disaster. What the hell; let’s do it anyway. I have adapted one of my favorite board games, The Settlers of Catan. The rules and spreadsheet are posted below.

I know some of you may be playing G&M and PwtP (or are in Drake’s PTSD therapy for Survivor), but as the Milkman and I were discussing, certain types tend to take on more than is reasonable. I am betting some of those types are well-represented here. No pressure, though, this will work with just a few people as well as a bunch. Be forewarned, this could very well end up being the May game as well. I just have no clue how long it will take. Take into account that there is no penalty for non-subbing (although it will certainly not be to your benefit) and we won’t be taking turns on the weekends.

Okay, you know the drill – sign up or ask questions in the comments below.

(MILKMAN):

Hey, CJ. I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck full of fun lately. It’s fun, but still, it’s a truck. So, whether I play this or not, it should be a hell of a thing to watch. We realize this will probably take some real time and some effort, so I won’t be offended if you take one off. Actually, a slightly smaller field might make it easier to play AND run. But if you DO take it off, it might be a while before your next thing.

Also, if this spills into a second month, I’ll have to decide what to do with championship matches. Hmm.

Anyway, sign up and Annette will take care of things from there.

  1. I’ll play, but I’ve already told Nutty Bar that I’m only submitting moves through inter-office mail. Or by post-it note.

  2. I have played Settlers of Catan before. That’s why I won’t be playing it here.

If I ever find my old first-edition set of the Illuminati game, or my full intro set of Illuminati: New World Order cards, maybe I’ll try to adapt it for the CJ crowd.

    • I’ve played that one! That would be sweet.

I’ve not played Settlers of Catan. I’ll look at the rules, but if they’re longer than a few sentences, my eyes will glaze over and I’ll probably end up thinking about ice cream.

    • I think it’s safe to say that no one has read the rules. And that no one will read the rules until Annette tells us we can’t do something because it’s expressly forbidden in the rules.

I mean, how many people signed up before yickit pointed out that the link to the rules didn’t work?

  3. This hits my sweet spot of things I doubt I’ll regret not participating in. Just too much.
Thanks for giving me a month or two off to finish my FSA.

    • That reads as mean. Please allow me to clarify.

I don’t mind that you’re trying something different, but like Risk or whatever that was at CdL, I’m fine letting this pass by without that constant twinge of “I wish I was doing that” like I’ve gotten from Survivor and PwtP seasons that I’ve skipped.

      • I read you, man. That’s one reason I ran this one this month…lots of folks are already doing plenty here and there’s no reason to run them more ragged, so I allowed Annette to run this big one and give a break to anyone who needed to keep it simple. I’m not even sure if I’ll be playing.
